I am curious about the No Visit Eligible....never had to deal with that. He is on his way home from Waco so I'll ask him about it tonight.

My Husband said that the only thing he could think would be that your pen-pal might have got a discipline case or else he is in "lock-up". Its usually for 45 days, then he can get a visit then start 45 days again. My Husband said too that Telford is a shitty unit, the inmates are always fighting up there.

Thank you for your answer! I've checked and now it's yes again for offender visitation eligible.
Lock-up means that you can't get out of the cell for 45 days?

I think that Telford Unit is a maximum security prison so I believe you when you say that. I am a bit upset knowing that he's living in such a violent environment ... Does you husband know more about Telford Unit? Or maybe where I can find testimony about this unit?

Yes, Telford is Max. Security. Its down the road from Beto. Lock-up is like the prison in the prison and it depends on what the inmates do to determine what the court at the prison will sentence the inmates to. It can be anything from visit restriction, ad seg., commissary restrictions...more time added to sentence, good time taken away etc. My Husband was never at Telford but he met guys that had been through that unit. He says that they just stay in trouble at that unit for some reason. That they act like morons there.

Telford has mental health beds as part of its medical facility, which could account for violent or erratic behaviour of some of the inmates.

Elvire - ALL of TDCJ's units have the potential to be violent environments. Inmates are housed together depending on their crimes and their behaviour, but those serving time for a non-violent offence are just as likely as any other inmate to be violent in a specific setting. Equally, those serving sentences for a violent act, may have impecable records of behaviour while in prison with no displays of violence at all.

Prison itself is an violent environment, I do know that. I wasn't minimizing what people could experience in others units ^^. But as Natalie said that TO was particularly shitty maybe he has more chance to get into troubles. Or as you said, maybe not, but anyway, I am still a bit upset :). I will try to distract him even more :)

He has a life sentence. His parole is not before 20/25 years. That's why I am upset because it's a very long time in such a violent environment so you have plenty of time to lose your mind or to get into troubles ...

Elvire, I didn't mean to imply you weren't aware of how prisons are. I know it's not much comfort, but that's how TDCJ units are. It is his choice whether he distances himself from what's going on around him or not. While there are instances of inmates being disciplined for something that wasn't their fault (directly or indirectly), if the infraction is serious enough for them to be put into Ad Seg or on similar restrictions, they have usually done something (or refused to do something) to get themselves there.

My husband has done almost 10 years in a max security environment, and has only had two minor cases and one major that actually turned out to his benefit, and none of those have been for fighting. It can be done. He has another 10 years at least before he sees parole.
There and back again....

Like Sunray says, it has a whole lot to do with the inmate himself; whether he's involved in gang activity or he decides to stay 'solo' and either have associates or not.
I'm not saying that everyone has the strength of character or integrity to do this - or even the wish to do so. But it is certainly very much an individual choice.
For what it's worth, my MWI in Beto has had two minor cases in 8½ years, and he does whatever he can to keep his life 'as boring as possible', as he says.
(And judging by the last 15 months that I have known him, this IS the way he conduct himself.)
Beto is probably as rough as they come (correct me, Natalie, if I'm wrong) - but even if you're doing life, you still have the choice of how to live the life you have.

This is also where the support from outside can assist an inmate in making good choices and making it easier to 'make life boring' ;)

I hope my PP is as strong as your husband, Sunray and your MWI DanPal. I imagine that is not always easy to stay out of trouble even if you want to, but as you both said, it can be. Maybe I have a misrepresentation of prisons in Texas. For me, it's like a living hell where it's hard to say sane and make good choices.

I know a lady whose MWI husband served 26 years of a 99 year sentence. I also know a guy whose a lifer, the ONLY reason he has not made Parole is because he has no place to Parole out to. It can be done with good behavior. But it is a living hell in there and fights are difficult to avoid. How much time of his sentence has he already served? Is he a young dude or old-timer? Have you even talked to him about gang affiliation? If I get to nosy just let me know. Beto is rougher because of the inmates...gangs retaliating. Telford is rougher because of the guards, they'll beat you up and take food away. When Telford goes on medical chain they stop at Beto and spend the night. Telford, inmates throw **** on you. Does he go to church?

He's young. He already served almost 10 years. I never asked if he was in a gang but he does not seems to be that kind of guy (but who knows, I know him since a very little time). I'll try to ask him more question about his life in Telford but it's not easy things to ask. They can take food away and beat you? That's sound very Guantanamo to me ...
No, he's not a believer. He's strongly "against" any religion actually.

Yes and yes!!! Ask him questions about his life in there. Yes, TDCJ is a mess. If he's a young dude he probably is a trouble-maker and a gang member. My Husband was too, Aryan Brotherhood gang member and stayed in trouble for years. That is how it is in there. Your pen-pal more than likely thinks he has nothing to live for and what are "they" going to do, put him in prison? Well, James and I are here....always feel free to ask us anything.
