Offender Visitation Eligible: NO
« on: May 17, 2014, 11:19:35 am »
I don't know if it's the right place to ask that but I was on the TDCJ website and I used to Offender Information Search and I found that: Offender Visitation Eligible: NO under his name.

I was wondering what could cause that? and what are the consequences? I mean I am from Europe so if he's not eligible for visitation that's no problem for me but I was wondering if it could impact our correspondance?

I would not effect your mail. He might be on lockdown or have so other restriction to why he is not allowed visits at this time.

It is unusual to not be allowed visitation at all in TDCJ, even Death Row inmates can have visits.

I suspect that this will be because of a security lockdown at his unit, which may be just a small section of the prison - it doesn't have to be the whole prison. It is at the Warden's discretion whether inmates under security lockdown can receive vistis or not, and it is also not unusual for a whole wing to be placed on lockdown and restricted because of the antics of just one or two inmates.

Mail will run as usual, though may be a little slower if the mailroom is reading it more carefully for some reason (for example if it is a gang-related situation). Inmates will not be allowed to go to commissary at the start of a security lockdown, will not be allowed any recreational or educational activities and will be able to shower and exchange linen every 3 days. If inmates could call Europe, he would not be allowed to use the phones during a lockdown.

To check further, you could try putting his number into the eComm system. If it says "inmate can receive deposits only" then the chances are high that his part of the prison is on lockdown - unless you know that someone has already used his $50 allowance for this quarter.

If you want to check his location in the prison, start a Jpay email to him, then hit the Preview button, and at the top of the email it will give his housing location (eg C 3-18, which means wing C, row/tier 3, cell 18).

I tried on eComm and he can receive deposit and food, and everything.

Oh I didn't know for the Jpay thing. But how can it help me since I don't know the configuration of the prison? And I don't have the same thing as you (well not the same form) at the top of the letter :s

You should see the header below when you click the Jpay Preview button. Circled (badly!) in red is the 2-character code for the unit. Circled in blue is the wing and the run/tier location. Circled in green is the cell number.

You can call the prison and ask if a particular wing is on lockdown.

Thanks a lot! I see. For my PP I got: 12DC2 39. So you see it's not the same form as you, but maybe you can translate it into english, because it's chinese for me!

Is your penpal in Ad Seg, or perhaps in a dorm? The "39" would be either a bunk number or a cell number.

I don't know. I didn't ask. I don't know how I should or could ask such things to him ...  So you think he could be in Ad Seg? Oh, that's not very good for him if so :(

The best thing is to just ask question. It's better to just have it all out in the open if he is ok with talking about it, than to walk around on egg shells.

Definitely just ask him. TDCJ wont censor a question like that, and it will help you to find out more information about his living conditions, how often he can go to commissary, whether he can work, etc.

The only thing I can think the "DC" part of his living assignment stands for is "Detention Cell" because it's not the code letters for Telford unit (that is "TO").

Yes there is a TO before the 12DC2 39. But Detention Cell isn't the cell you are in when you're awaiting trial or sentences?

I will ask him as soon as I got an answer from him. I should have got a letter this week but I got nothing :(

No, if he is in TDCJ then he has already been sentenced.

In Texas, if you break the law, you start off usually in a county jail. You are there while you have your court hearings, and the sentencing. Then you wait for TDCJ to collect you.

If you have further charges to face after you have entered TDCJ, you usually go back to county jail while you go through those court procedings, and then back to TDCJ to serve the sentence.

If you misbehave while in TDCJ, you normally just have a disciplinary hearing, but if you do something serious like start a fight, hit an officer, etc then some prisons have specific areas of detention and that's all I can think of at the moment that would relate to "DC". It would also help explain why he cannot have visits at this time, if he is under investigation for something. He has probably had his property removed and may not have any writing supplies, so you may not hear from him for a while.

I would suggest sending him a card or postcard every few days, just so he knows you are still there for him, but don't keep telling him you haven't heard anything because if he can't write that will either anoy or depress him. It would be OK to just say something like "I can see on Jpay that your cell assignment has changed, so I'll just keep sending you these cards until you can write to me and let me know what's happening."
There and back again....

OK ... So he can still receive my Jpay, letters, cards, pictures but he probably can't answer it, right? I sent him a Jpay on May 5th and a postcard on the 10th (not saying "I don't have news", it was just because I was in my home country for a week-end so I thought it would be nice to have a postcard from Paris ^^). And I will follow your advice: if I don't have news from him at the beginning of the coming week, I will sent him a letter with some pictures :)

He is almost certainly receiving mail and Jpay emails, even if he cannot send any :)
