Stickers, scents and lipstick kisses
« on: June 10, 2014, 12:52:36 am »
A common question from those writing to TDCJ inmates, whether friends or family, is are we able to use stickers or scents on the letters and/or envelopes.

My husband has been in 6 TDCJ units and we have had a variety of experiences. Coffield is tollerant of scents and stickers on both letters and envelopes. Goree withheld the envelope because it had a sticker on it and called my husband to the mailroom to collect the letter. At Byrd, he was told that as long as the mailroom staff could see through the paper + sticker when held up to the light, it was OK.

As you can see, there is no uniform policy across all TDCJ prisons: it is at the mailroom's discretion whether a piece of mail is allowed or denied.

When it comes to lipstick kisses, I never put them on the letter itself. I make a few on a sheet of paper, and then cut them out individually. Then I put one into the envelope randomly. That way, the mailroom can deny the kiss if they choose to but allow the letter to be delivered.

What are your experiences with scented paper and stickers on mail to TDCJ inmates?

My experience from Beto is that scented letters are no problem. Lipstick kisses on the letter itself go thru' smoothly too.
I have never attempted stickers; I always thought that was an obvious no-no, but maybe not? ;)
I'll try it one day.

My experience with Ramsy I, Stevenson and stiles they have no problem with stickers or perfume on the letters. I've never sent lipstick kisses.  I've also never had a letter held because i used ink stamps.

Oh ... I've put a sticker in a letter. I didn't think I could be a problem. I really hope he got the letter because I put pictures :s.

So it seems stickers are widely accepted in TDCJ. Now I'm wondering if homemade cards would pass through too?
Did any of you try that?
I mean a card where things are glued on the front. Like several layers of paper. And a paper insert glued on the inside.
I had a friend make one (I'm not talented in that area) for Father's Day and scanned it, and sent that. Maybe I could have gone with the original? Too late now, but next time :)

It used to be OK at Coffield but they are stricter on the "homemade" now. You have to keep them simple and usually all in one or two pieces. I did a paper basketweave heart design a couple of years ago and it was denied even though it had no glue. They said it was because it was handmade, but the mailroom lady told hubby I had used too many little strips of paper.

I sometimes send photo cards, where I get a piece of coloured card, fold it in half, cut two diagonal slots across the corners on the "front" and then poke the corners of the photo through the slots to hold it in place. They are still OK.

Do you think that masking tape is allowed on the envelop or letter? I just found one with "Made in France" (and the french flag) on it and I though it would be fun to put it on the envelop :D

They would treat it like a sticker. I suggest you write just a short note, and put the tape on the envelope, and then if the letter is denied it isn't something that you have spent hours writing and can't replace :)

Some mailrooms will call the inmate to the mailroom and give them the letter but not the envelope (if the envelope is denied) and some will issue a denial slip for the entire letter and envelope together.

Alala, damn you Texas! But thanks for the advice, I'll try that :) If the letter is denied, will they sent it back to me or just throw it up?

Anything that the mailroom denies, the inmate is given the option to return to sender at the inmate's expence, or destroy.

That's why it would be best to try on something that isn't very important, just in case.
