Has anyone else heard that some units are limiting mail to only those only on said inmates visit list?

I have checked all of the usual source locations and I can't find anything related to that rumour at all. It would be seriously challenged by organisations such as the Texas Inmate Familes Association (TIFA) and church groups (who send a lot of support cards, newsletters etc) and I think TDCJ would be on shakey legal ground as well if they tried to implement that one.

I read something on a different board..but it all came off weird to me, cause it seems easy to add anyone to their list so i don't see how that would limit mail..

TDCJ inmates can only have 10 individuals on their visit list, and 10 individuals on their phone list (they can be a different set of 10 individuals for both lists).

From what i've read it was about who they could send personal property to.

Ah that is slightly different. TDCJ inmates can only mail property to individuals on their visit list, so if the inmate works in the craft shop, or wants to send art boards to the outside world, it must go to someone on their visit list - visitors can also collect items from the unit when they visit.

But inmates can receive letters from anyone, and can send mail to anyone that is not on thier negative mailing list (eg victims, minors etc).

I wonder of this is a rule that's adhered to. It seems not, as I have received several gifts mailed from the prison, prior to me getting on the visitprs' list. So it may depend a bit on the prison too it seems :) Confusing, but that's life  ;)
I do believe, however, that in order to pick up things on visit you have tp be on the list. It would make sense too, wouldn't it ;)

As with most things in TDCJ, the Warden decides what happens at their unit within the general rules for TDCJ. It does not state in the Friends and Family Information that there are restrictions on what inmates can mail out or to whom, but some units do place restrictions on larger bulkier items being mailed out.

From what i was able to read on a different board, it's not state wide but a few units are if a person is not on the visit list then you can't send them personal property.  But i don't know all of the units this effects.

Inmates are not supposed to "profit" financially from their time in prison in Texas, and some Wardens interpret this in a much wider way than others. I think many of us are aware of some individuals who try to obtain personal items belonging to high profile inmates, with the intention of selling them online to memorabilia hunters. Other inmates may attempt to steal property and send it to the outside for the same financial gain.

Items made in the craft shops can normally only be picked up by friends and family at visits, as they would be too big to mail out anywhere.
