Do you know about this website? I would be interested in using it  for the mailbox address.

"It only costs the inmate a first class stamp to send the letter rather than international postage.
We receive the letters usually within 3-5 days of being sent so it gets to you faster than international shipping."

And then they scan the letter. You have to pay 25$ a year for the box and 1$ to receive the scan letter (1$ for 6 images pages, then 2$ for 7-11).

I would be interesting to speed the thing up and it would cost less for my PP since I won't have to pay for international postage (I am from Europe). What do you think?

I use jmail for two of my pals. It's not that much cheaper if you have the letters from your pals sent there, since you pay $1 to download that letter too. It is faster, since the letters stay within the US.

Yes it will be a bit more expansive for me but cheaper for him (since they are not paid to work in Texas, it can make a difference for him). And I will move three times in the next 8 months so I guess it will be easier to keep track !

Hi Elvire,
I'm sure you've checked that your pp is able to respond by JPay, right? Many inmates in Texas are only able to receive JPays but not reply through that service. They have to then reply by snail mail. It still makes it a bit faster, though, if one of the parties is able to JPay now and then :)

Hi DanPal,

Jpay and Jmail are two different things. Inmates don't need to have a jmail account, it's nothing more than a PO Box type of thing. The people at Jmail scan the letters the inmates send so you get a pdf file with their letter.

Yes Dan, I am already sending me Jpay messages but I will use Jmail to receive his answers through the Jmail Box. It will be faster and cheaper for him since he will send the letter in the US :)

Aah, ok, yes, I get it :) Maybe I should look into that.
But I gather that if you send long letters (14-18 pages) then it'll be a lot more expensive for the pp to use JMail than snail mail, right?

It doesn't make it more expensive for your pal, using Jmail. If anything it's cheaper since he/she doesn't need international stamps if you use the Jmail mailbox option.  The cost of downloading his/her letters as well as the mailbox get paid by you, not by the inmate.

Of course you could also choose to not use the mailbox function. In that case nothing changes for your penpal since he'll answer the letter you send through Jmail by sending it to your house instead of to Jmail in Los Angeles.

"Fee Structure (For Jmail Box):
- $25 Annual Subscription - This fee is to help cover the cost of the large post office box rental we must maintain as well as handling fees.
- $1 per letter (each 6 page images) - When you receive a letter you are charged 1 mail credit for the scanning and processing of the letter to your account up to 6 page images. If your letter is over 6 page images you are charged an additional $1 for each subsequent 6 page images.

A page image is an image of 1 side of a sheet of paper, so a sheet of paper with writing on the front and back would be 2 page images. Two pages of text only written on the front of each sheet is still 2 page images. We delete blank pages so you are not charged for them. If your letter is 7-11 pages you will be charged $2, if your letter is 12-17 pages long you will be charged $3 and so on."

So it will cost your PP the price of a US first class stamp and it will cost you between 3-4$ to download a 14-18 pages letter.
