A shakedown is the unanounced inspection of an inmate's property and/or living area by Officers.
Shakedowns happen routinely during the twice-yearly lockdowns at TDCJ prisons. Inmates usually have to gather up their belongings and carry them from their cell or living area to a larger space such as the gym. Their items are then inspected by the Officers, while their cells or living areas are also inspected by other Officers.
Individual inmates may be subjected to shakedowns at any time, regardless of whether the unit is on lockdown.
