Lockdowns are where inmates are restricted to either their cells or their beds for a period of time. Inmates will be told to "rack up" by the Officers and then must stay in their cells or on their beds until the restriction is lifted for their dorm, wing or whole prison.
Lockdowns can be short (a few minutes) or last for an indefinite period.
Lockdowns can be for administrative or security purposes. Most TDCJ units have two main lockdowns per year, where the whole unit is thoroughly searched and planned manitenance may also be carried out such as the installation of new security cameras.
