If the Administration receive information that an inmate or group of inmates is carrying out illegal behaviour (such as brewing "hooch", or making weapons) then officers will shakedown individual cells without searching everywhere else.

Shakedowns take manpower that some units find difficult to cover, so daily shakedowns would be unusual unless an inmate was blatantly misbehaving. Those inmates would be likely to be moved to Ad Seg temporarily so that they had less property and less opportunity to break the rules.
