What is a shakedown?
« on: May 07, 2014, 12:35:29 am »
A shakedown is the unanounced inspection of an inmate's property and/or living area by Officers.

Shakedowns happen routinely during the twice-yearly lockdowns at TDCJ prisons. Inmates usually have to gather up their belongings and carry them from their cell or living area to a larger space such as the gym. Their items are then inspected by the Officers, while their cells or living areas are also inspected by other Officers.

Individual inmates may be subjected to shakedowns at any time, regardless of whether the unit is on lockdown.

If you have any questions about shakedowns, please post them below :)

Do they have random daily shakedowns or are there set shakedowns on a few people?

If the Administration receive information that an inmate or group of inmates is carrying out illegal behaviour (such as brewing "hooch", or making weapons) then officers will shakedown individual cells without searching everywhere else.

Shakedowns take manpower that some units find difficult to cover, so daily shakedowns would be unusual unless an inmate was blatantly misbehaving. Those inmates would be likely to be moved to Ad Seg temporarily so that they had less property and less opportunity to break the rules.
