What is a lay-in pass?

In TDCJ, inmates are issued with a lay-in pass to excuse them from their work assignment for a specific day. Inmates usually receive a lay-in pass to attend a medical or dental appointment, to pick something up from the mailroom, to see a parole officer or for some other official activity that requires their attendance during the time that they would normally be working.
There and back again....
